What Is The Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Program?

Wascana Driving School wants to let you know that the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Program is a system that helps new drivers gain the skills and experience they need to become safe, responsible drivers. The program has three stages:

  • The learner's permit stage
  • The intermediate stage
  • The full license stage

Each stage has its requirements, which must be met before a driver can move on to the next stage. For example, in the learner's permit stage, drivers must complete a certain number of hours of supervised driving and pass a written exam. In the intermediate stage, they must limit their driving to certain times of day and under certain conditions, such as no driving after dark or with more than one passenger under the age of 21.

What Are Its Advantages And Who Is Eligible To Enroll?

The Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Program is available to all new drivers in the United States. There are many benefits to participating in the program, such as:

What are some tips for parents to help their teens become safe drivers during these phases of the GDL program?'

There are a few tips that parents can follow to help their teens become safe drivers during the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Program:

  • SetClear Expectations and Rules

Parents should sit down with their teen drivers and set clear expectations and rules for driving. This includes things such as obeying the speed limit, not texting while driving, and not driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

  •  Lead by Example

Parents should lead by example and practice safe driving habits themselves. This will help to instill good habits in their teen driver.

  • Be Involved

Parents should be involved in their teen's learning-to-drive process. This includes things like accompanying them on practice drives and providing feedback.

  • Be Patient

Parents should be patient with their teen drivers as they are learning. It takes time and practice to develop the skills needed to become a safe driver.
